GLA:D® Australia is a not-for-profit initiative led by La Trobe University, and its goal is to improve the lives of people with hip or knee OA.
The GLA:D program is an evidence-based exercise program aimed at helping individuals with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA) manage their symptoms and enhance their quality of life.
   The program typically consists of:
  • An initial appointment to assess and set goals
  • Education session
  • Twice-weekly sessions over six weeks (12 supervised exercise sessions)
  • A follow-up appointment to evaluate progress
After completing the GLA:D program, participants typically have a follow-up appointment with their physiotherapist to discuss progress and establish future goals, such as continuing with a gym-based program or increasing physical activity.
The GLA:D program has been associated with faster recovery for individuals who undergo knee or hip joint replacement surgeries after completing the program. It involves questionnaires to measure changes in pain, function, quality of life, and medication use.
Key benefits of the GLA:D program:
  • Reduced Pain: The program includes exercises designed to alleviate pain in the affected joint, which can be a significant source of discomfort for OA patients.
  • Improved Function: By strengthening the muscles around the hip or knee joint, GLA:D enhances mobility and function, making everyday activities easier for participants.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Through pain reduction and improved function, GLA:D can enhance the overall quality of life for OA sufferers, potentially reducing their reliance on medication and other treatments.
  • Increased Knowledge and Self-Management Skills: The program offers education and training on OA symptom management and joint preservation, empowering individuals to take control of their health.
  • Cost-Effective:Studies have shown that the GLA:D program is cost-effective compared to other OA interventions, making it an accessible option for those with budget constraints.
